COERR Surin Office organized a Training on Mine Risk Awareness in Burirum Schools

In July 2012, COERR Surin and Aranyaprathet staff have organized two training courses in Mine Risk Awareness for schoolchildren in Burirum Province, one of many provinces identified as landmine contamination areas in Thailand.

On July 19, a training was held in Ban Nikhom Sai Tho 8th School in Chantobpetch Subdistrictม Ban Kruad District, Burirum Province, in which 89 primary schoolchildren and 6 teachers have participated.

On July 20, another training course was held in Kongthapbok Upatham School in Sai Tagoo Subdistrict, Ban Kruad District, Burium, in which 115 primary schoolchildren and 3 teachers attended.

This year is the second of the three year program in which COERR plans to train 10 schools each year to raise the mine awareness of the border communities focusing on children in schools along the Thai-Cambodian border. The contents included the two components: first on basic knowledge to understand the danger and to identify the physical site of landmine, and then about behavior change to prevent and avoid landmine as well as to report the landmines whereabouts/findings to the persons concerned for further proper destruction.

At the end of the training, a handbook of Landmine Awareness is provided to every participant in hoping that the information in the book will equip their parents and family members with safety precaution so that the border villagers can live their normal life in the mine contamination land and to be safe from the hazardous landmines.
